I had a similar problem a few weeks ago right after changing my oil, except it happened only in fourth gear. I'd let the clutch out and it would occasionally slip. I'd let the clutch out fully, hear a quiet, high pitched "wwhhirrr" for a second or two, and then it would just suddenly engage. I had the oil up to the top full line, so I drained two or three ounces out to bring it down to the middle area between the lines. I didn't think this would make much of a difference, but it seems to have fixed the problem. I think these engines are really finicky and start acting up when fed even slightly too little or too much oil.
